Named
for the Egytpian god of the moon. Thoth (traditionally
represented by a man with the head of the stork-like ibis) was, as the
patron of wisdom, the keeper of time and the inventor of science,
art, and letters. The krewe, who began parading in 1950 with 5
floats, specifically plans its route to pass in front of 14 separate
institutions that care for the disabled or the ill, earning them the
unique nickname of "The Krewe of Shut-Ins". Today, Thoth is a
major event on the parading schedule, featuring the floats The Royal
Barge, The High Priests of Thoth, and the new Egyptian Jesters float,
added in 2004.
