The Knights of Hermes (Orleans Parish)
Krewe of Hermes Krewe organized in 1937
500 male riders
28 floats
Turn of the century-style parade
King Hermes (identity never made public)
Queen (announced on parade day)
Look for embossed cups, stuffed animals, and fluted doubloons, the collector's items being the purple coins handed out by the equestrian lietuenants.
The Knights of Hermes distinguished their inaugural parade as the first to use neon lighting for its floats in 1938!
Created by a group of Orleans businessmen to boost the fading parade schedule after the Great Depression, the knights take their name from the Greek mythos of the winged courier of the gods.  Featuring flambeaux and torch carriers, Hermes is a step back in time to the grandest age of Carnival, beginning with the golden statue that preceeds each parade, right down to the air of secrecy that pervades the air around them.
