The Krewe du Vieux (Orleans Parish)
|
Krewe
organized in 1987
900+
male and female riders/marchers
?? floats
19th century mule-drawn style parade
|
Standard royalty, infrequent appearances
of such
|
Only
the wooden nickles and the emblemized throws done by the 17-some-odd
subkrewes are collectible, but the experience is priceless.
|
The
Krewe du Vieux is an all-adult krewe which prides itself on its mature
themes, and all that
phrase implies.
Consequently, your humble Professor cannot recommend this krewe's
parade as a family-friendly event. However, the experience of
attending from an historical perspective is priceless, for the parade
is the closest modern representation of a Mardi Gras parade from the
late 1800's!
|
|
The best way to
describe this krewe is to simply read their mission statement:
"The Krewe du Vieux is a non-profit organization
dedicated to the historical and traditional concept of a Mardi Gras
parade as a venue for individual creative expression and satirical
comment....We believe in exposing the world to the true nature of Mardi
Gras—and in exposing ourselves to the world."
This krewe is among those krewes that
present flambeaux, including the krewes of
Babylon, Chaos, Druids,
Hermes, Orpheus, Proteus, Saturn,
and Sparta. |
This
krewe was stopped from marching in the 149th Carnival
celebrations
by Hurricane Katrina. The krewe shares that bond with
Adonis,
Aphrodite, Arabi,
Atlas, Bards, Choctaw,
Cleopatra,
Gladiators, Grela, Hermes, L'il
Rascals,
Mercury, NOMTOC, Oshun,
Pegasus,
Pontchartrain, Saturn, and Crescent City. |
