Though they carry the name of the Native
American tribe that inhabited Louisiana in the 1700's, this krewe's
roots are based in southern government, beginning with its founder
State Representative Leonard Santos. A member of the OId Regular
Democratic Organization, it was this political group that gave the
krewe its name. The theme was taken from a life-sized wooden
Indian statue that resided in the group's St. Charles Avenue
headquarters. Originally, the krewe followed its own route
through Algiers, but now follows the Krewe
of Grela through
Gretna.
This krewe shares a committment to
children's causes with the krewes of Aladdin,
Centurions, Choctaw, Grela,
Jason, Little Rascals, Mid-City, Muses,
Shangri-La, Sparta, and Thoth. |
This
krewe was stopped from marching in the 149th Carnival celebrations
by Hurricane Katrina. The krewe shares that bond with
Adonis,
Aphrodite, Arabi,
Atlas, Bards,
Cleopatra,
Gladiators, Grela, Hermes, L'il
Rascals,
Mercury, NOMTOC, Oshun,
Pegasus,
Pontchartrain, Saturn, du Vieux, and Crescent City. |
